The Truth Will Set You Free – Part 18 of 20

I recently read a post on Johnny B. Truant’s blog that really hit home. So much so that I wanted to do two things: share it with my readers and 2) think on and write about each piece of his post. The post is “20 Truths About Life No One Wants To Believe” and the next one I am going to tackle is:

18. You really can achieve just about anything. It may take you a while, but you can in fact achieve most reasonable things and plenty of unreasonable things. You’ll see that if you stop deciding that things are impossible before even trying. (See also: Everyday Legendary’s central premise.)

One of my favorite thoughts on this idea is something I heard from the late, great Earl Nightingale and it goes something like this: have dreams and goals and work hard [every day]; the time is going to pass anyway.*

So many things seem unreasonable because the current version of you cannot see yourself doing it.

Sometimes this isn’t wrong, it’s just short-sighted.

Of course, the first time you walk into a gym you cannot lift a heavy weight, but if you start with light weights and lift regularly and eat and sleep well, eventually you be able to lift that once “impossible” weight.

The same is true for just about anything you can imagine.

I believe – truly believe – that anything we can conceive and believe in, we can create. There’s a perfect intelligence to authentic desires that doesn’t allow us to (truly, deeply) have a desire that isn’t possible for us to create.

I’m not talking about fantasies or the wants created by consumer culture, but the true, authentic, heart-felt desires of our Soul – the goals that will not only satisfy us in ways other things can’t, but grow us in necessary and perfect ways in the process.

I am fundamentally an optimist. Whether that comes from nature or nurture, I cannot say. Part of being optimistic is keeping one’s head pointed toward the sun, one’s feet moving forward. You can tell me what you want, what you dream about, what your “Ideal Life” would be, what you want to start or stop, . . . , but all that matters is what you do. At the end of the day: behavior always wins. All that – really – matters is action. Of course, emotions beget…
