The Best Time to Build a Roof (and to meditate, and… )

When is the best time to build a roof on your house ?

When it’s raining?

Of course not.

You put the roof on as soon as you can, when it’s sunny.

Meditation is the same way: you meditate before the storms of stress and change come.

Does it take a while to build an excellent roof that holds up to the storms we typically face?

Yup.

Are there storms that even a strong roof cannot withstand?

Of course . . . .

But if you never build, and maintain, that roof, you’re always going to get wet when it rains.

So it is with the non-resourceful thoughts – and the negative emotions that accompany them – that come with an un-trained mind.

Train.

Your.

Mind.

On one level, wisdom is nothing more than the ability to take your own advice. – Sam Harris In this construction, wisdom is not some universal thing, applicable to everyone, but ideas and practices that if applied to one’s life are helpful or useful. Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less. – C.S. Lewis So many people (or at least the ones with enough self-awareness) get this wrong. They think, consciously or otherwise, that they need to make themselves smaller, or lesser, to be “humble.” It’s a mistake of thinking. You’re amazing. You have…
