The Missing Element

There are many resources for the “how” of anything.

If you want to be more productive, successful, have better relationships, get promoted, start a business, . . . and on and on, there’s no shortage of resources that will lay out exactly what you must do to have whatever it is you want.

They are missing but one thing.

One precious, absolutely necessary, thing.

The Why.

If you don’t know why you want something you will do precious little to create it.

You won’t seek out the resources to guide you through the change.

You won’t make the changes to your current comfortable way of doing things that are necessary.

You won’t persevere when it gets difficult, or scary, or lonely.

And, even if you do get started and make significant progress, you won’t keep at it towards the end when you’re oh so close, but it feels like it won’t happen or things are going wrong.

Your Why must be stronger than your Why Not – it must be stronger than your “I’m good, that sounds nice, but I’m okay now.”

When you get clear enough, and authentic enough, about your Why the How will take care of its self.

So, if there’s something about your life you want to change, focus your energy on creating the strongest Why you can. And keep refining it and clarifying it as you go.

It’s the Why that will keep you going.

What we have or don’t have (good/bad relationships, healthy or un-healthy weight, sound finances or crushing…

  • Choose Confidence

“People die of fright and live of confidence.” – Thoreau I think Thoreau, among other things, was speaking of courage here. Confidence is what results when courage (being afraid, but taking a reasonable risk anyway) is combined with purpose (the energy that comes from knowing what we want and why we want it). Is courage…

  • The Implications of Thoughts

As I was preparing my coffee just a minute ago I had a realization: thoughts have consequences. Everyone can identify with the idea that actions have consequences, but thoughts? Yes, I believe so. Implementing this, effectively, does require a high level of awareness. We spend so much time with, and in, our thoughts that we ought to…

  • The Right Way To Gossip

As destructive as gossip is normally, turned on its head it can be an incredible force for good. A recent e-mail from Darren Hardy described the power of reverse-gossip: talking about people, behind their backs, in a positive way. Read about it here.  It’s akin to (a definition of) true generosity: giving to someone who really…
