A Way to Truly Honor*

Patriotism consists not in waving the flag, but in striving that our country shall be righteous as well as strong. – James Bryce

As we, in the United States, take a day to honor those who gave their lives in battle, for our country, let us ponder that ultimate sacrifice.

Let us examine ourselves as citizens and the role we play in creating a system of governing that creates policies that send men and women to war.

Let us ask ourselves if we are sufficiently engaged in the democratic process.

If not, what must we do to engage more fully, more deeply?

There is no time to wait, even with soldiers (mostly) back from Iraq, and many more returning from Afghanistan, there are still many in the line-of-fire all over the globe.

Let’s do our part to ensure that the danger they expose themselves to and the sacrifices they make are not in vain.
