Anxiety or Anticipation?

Anxiety is caused by a lack of control, organization, preparation, and action. – David Kekich

There’s a difference between anxiety or (slightly nervous) anticipation.

I’ve found that before a key event, like a job interview or a first date, my mental energy heightens.

This can be a good thing, or not.

If I’m feeling anxious, it’s likely due to the factors Kekich lists above: I feel like I don’t have any control, and/or I’m dis-organized, and/or I’m un-prepared.

The antidote to anxiety is simple, but generally, just involves hard work – before the fact.

(Slightly nervous) anticipation is something different.

When my mental state is heightened, and I’m feeling a little nervous, it means I care about something. It helps me to focus and pay attention, to clear away distractions.

Anxiety is toxic.

Avoid it by being skilled, organized and prepared.

(Slightly nervous) anticipation, however, is to be welcomed and enjoyed.

People like to play with the letters of “fear” and make them into cute little acronyms. Some of them are actually useful, one comes to mind: False Evidence Appearing Real. Fear stops so many people from doing what they want to do that I feel compelled to introduce my own little riff on the four…
