What Is Genius, Really?

Genius . . . means little more than the faculty of perceiving in an unhabitual way.” – William James

So much of our thinking is habitual.

With very little actual variation, we think the same thoughts, about the same things, in the same way – day after day.

Because so much of the World’s thinking is rote and un-creative, the mere act of thinking “differently” is so rare – and therefore revolutionary – that it often is considered “genius.”

It may well be, but the more amazing thing is how rare this unhabitual perception is.

Do know one thing though: genius is not a function of intelligence.

More often than not it is merely the willingness to think differently, and pursue those thoughts where they may lead.
